My Review Of The Movie Burlesque

After filling up my two storage units with some really old stuff I sat down to watch the movie Burlesque. Yes, I know what you are thinking, I am just watching this movie but I wanted to see it but just could not find the time. I had a whole lot on my plate.

Now this movie starred Christina Aguilera and Cher, and was surely as ‘burlesque’ as it could be.

From the start the movie was moving at a brisk pace and partly because of this and the many stories it was exciting throughout. In each story the character shone and was easy to follow. The stories were also very well told.

Now to the music, and this movie was filled with it. The music was awesome and fun and I especially loved Cher’s (Tess in the movie) first song on screen ‘Welcome to Burlesque’. Another good one was Aguilera’s (Ali in the movie) last song in the movie ‘Show Me How You Burlesque’. All in all there about eighteen songs spread throughout the movie. Most of these songs have a lot of energy and that caused me to have to sing along, I couldn’t help myself.

The storyline is basically about a young sexy girl who wanted to be a success and all the challenge she had to endure.

Naturally there was a lot of dancing so believe me when I say they were well choreographed. The acting was great. I didn’t know Christina could act so well.

It was fun throughout and I was glad to have watched it. I am going to watch it again.

Decorate your body

Decorate your body

Let’s face it; burlesque is all about revealing a little flesh. Not too much (we’re not strippers) but enough just to tease and tantalise our audience, be they male or female!
This means that I dedicate as much time to making sure my skin looks in perfect condition as I do to selecting my outfit. It’s not enough to just slap on a bit of moisturiser, and hope that will cover up all the blemishes! I spend my days working for Red Diesel Bradford, after all, so my skin is in a bit of a state come the end of the week. If I have a show coming up, I make sure everywhere that’s going to be on view is waxed, massaged and exfoliated. No fake tan though! My character is the pale and interesting type (think of a red-headed Dita Von Teese) so for once my extremely white skin come is handy…
Once I’ve taken care of the essentials, there are the extra little touches that I like to employ to complete my look. A bit of powder will stop the skin from looking too shiny under the lights, which is particularly unattractive, while I also make sure I replace my boring, functional belly button ring with something more dazzling! Characterisation is everything in burlesque, and as mine is supposed to be a bit of a bad girl, I have a couple of fake tattoos that I always apply for shows. One of the girls once asked my why I didn’t just get the tattoos done for real; they’re pretty subtle and tasteful, she argued, and would save me a fortune on temporary transfers. Only problem is, I told her, I’m terrified of needles! It was all I could do to get through my belly button piercing when I was 19. A tattoo would be a step too far. Besides, it’s only my burlesque character that has them, not little old me!

Fosters fun

Fosters fun

Fosters is an Australian beer company knowing for providing the rest of the world with the crisp, refreshing beer that residents in Australia have at all times. If you really like beer and also like humor, you will be sure to love any Fosters TV ad that you see. These are some of the funniest ads on the market because they play up the fact that many people do not know anything about Australian terminology. While people in Australia do speak English, it is different in usage than the English that is spoken in England or the United States.

The basic idea of a Fosters TV ad is that it takes something that happens to someone and then says what that would be called in Australia. Since Australia is thought of as a tough, rugged country, this is often very funny to people who are not from the island continent. For instance, the ad may show someone getting covered in some sort of unappealing material, like tar, and then it would say: Sunscreen. The implication would be that most people would hate that, but that tough Australians would use it for sunscreen.

The ads always end in the same way, by making the claim that Fosters is the Australian word for beer. It is something that is completely Australian, that is tough and rugged in the same way that the people and the country are. The ads are designed first to be funny and next to get people to buy Fosters beer so that they can be a part of the culture. It is all part of the branding process.

Gold Digger

Gold Digger

Gold Digger

I’m finding it increasingly hard to find really lovely contemporary designer jewellery that is affordable as well as being gorgeous. My favourite weekly read is the Style supplement of the Sunday Times and they always have a fantastic selection of glitzy jewels and contemporary silver and gold items, but they are always sourced from really pricey sites such as mywardrobe.com or net-a-porter.com which puts me right out of their target audience. It is a real shame, not to mention frustrating, because I tend to shop with my eyes rather than my brain or my purse. I scan the page and see something gorgeous and that’s it. I have to have it. It’s only when I look in the bottom corner to see the price and supplier when my heart drops and I have to tell myself – you can’t have that because it’s too expensive. My favourite pieces are vintage-inspired (they look great with my burlesque outfits) but these seem to be ‘all the rage’ and where there’s interest, there’s exploitation. In Liberty’s flagship Regent Street store recently, I was doing some Christmas shopping and wanted to buy something special for my mother-in-law without breaking the bank. The main accessories and jewellery section was absolutely jam-packed with gorgeous stuff but it was so absurdly expensive that I just couldn’t bring myself to part with the cash. After investing several hours trawling the store, I finally found an exquisite pressed-silk ribbon necklace that I knew she’d adore and it was in the sale, too. This just shows that it is possible to find bargains but that you have to spend some serious time and effort digging them out. Frustrating and yet rewarding at the same time – it would be so much easier to be rich!

A countrywide phenomenon!

Burlesque is really taking off across the UK, and not just in the capital. There are classes, club nights and even bars dedicated to the beautiful dance in every town. I was recently away up in Sheffield (because of work – not through choice!) and managed to excuse myself from a boring business dinner, full of boring guys quoting Alan Partridge jokes, to check out a burlesque night in one of the bars up there, expecting it not to be a patch on the places I’m used to visiting in the big cities.
Well, I have to admit I was very pleasantly surprised. The night was held at a city centre bar which really looked the part. I’ve no idea if it always looks so cool, or if they just decorate it like that for the burlesque nights, but there was soft lighting, booths with skimpily-dressed waitress service and fabulous background music. A lot of the guests had really entered into the spirit too, shedding their heavy winter coats at the door to reveal some truly mind-bogglingly creative outfits.
There were several “professional” performers on the bill, who did range quite widely in skill and ability. One was a fairly well known dancer who I have seen at London events, but didn’t know she actually came from Sheffield! There were also some “open mic” spots, which I don’t always approve of. It usually involves some drunk woman in her pants, being encouraged by her equally drunk mates to get on stage and pretend to be a stripper; totally not what burlesque is about! On this score, Sheffield actually put London to shame, with all of the volunteers having obviously put some thought into their routines.
I guess the lesson is to not judge a book by its cover. Sheffield may look like a grim northern town – sorry – but it hides a lavishly glamorous and slightly seedy underbelly.

Let’s talk about fashion!

To be fashionable is the theme of the modern age. And if you make a wrong choice, you will fall behind the crowd by a great distance. And then fashion changes at such a fast pace that sometimes keeping up to it, itself become a huge adventure. This is where the importance of following up with changing fashion holds importance, especially if you are a burlesque dancer. So let’s get along with the latest trends before it too late.

When it comes to fashion, you can adopt many things that can give you a fashionable look during a performance or otherwise. With summer at its highest furry, a fashionable scarf can give a really good look and at the same time give the comfort and protection from the hot sun. Scarves are available in both silk and cotton. Picking the right color and material that goes well with a good pair summer dress can help a lot in becoming a style diva.

If you go by the current trend in fashion, scarves made out of silk are quite popular among the passing crowd. There are various ways how they can be worn to make it look beautiful. However, the French twist is a popular style which is prevalent in the crowd. Colors like neutral tones are making quite a stand in silk scarves. These things are quite a standout as they add to the versatility in the dresses.

Again, if we don’t mention about paisley scarves, we will miss a great deal in making the scarf more fashionable. They look perfect when meshed in aqua, pink or yellow giving a luxurious dimension to the attire you wear on special occasions. Even floral prints in paisley silk look great. Fashion is all about mix and match with some little bit of innovative ideas of your own. When such ideas are properly applied, new trends evolves. Scarves are just a small element in making yourself fashionable, and not to mention an accessory that spices up a burlesque dance routine. If you want good deals on designer scarves, you might want to search online. In fact comet discount codes are available for specific styles of scarves.

Thigh High Boots

Not everyone can carry off wearing boots which reach up to their thigh with élan. Those who can are the lucky ones amongst the brood of ladies who simply can look like cowboys out of an old Western movie. This look is more about couture fashion for the women who want to add that extra oomph factor in their image and strut around with pride in it. Made popular by the glamorous models on the ramp walk, this look teamed with a short white mini and a corset will make a guy melt in his shoes. Thigh high boots can also add more excitement to a burlesque performance.

The length of the thigh high boot is variable some even extending provocatively as far up as up to the lower hip area. In fact, these are the best suited for burlesque. Generally this leg wear would be way above the knee and would mostly be made of the same material which a knee length boot would be. Flexibility is of prime concern here as the boot needs to enable you to walk and sit, and most importantly dance, comfortably without feeling any tightness. Since the knee will be inside, the material of the thigh boot has to adjust according to the movement of the knee.

Knee high boots are more commonly worn amongst the fashion conscious women while the thigh high boot is predominately reserved for occasions which are mostly staged for displaying of fashion style. A certain sense of taboo prevails over wearing the thigh high boot as can be seen from the look given to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. She walks into a high fashion boutique in Beverly Hills and is immediately deplored for her dress sense with the thigh high boot as part of her accessory.

The typecasting of this style of boot does not bother some of the more famous celebrities in the music industry or of haute couture. You will find them sporting the thigh high boot at their music concerts or walking into an after party with them on. Wear it with confidence and that will give your look in the thigh high boot that special touch. The internet, these days, is the perfect place to search for good deals. And, you can get everything from comet discount codes to designer thigh high boot deals.

Neighbor’s Envy Owner’s Pride

Turn on the music and you will find my feet tapping or my hands grooving. I cannot describe the feeling of upliftment that I feel when my soul is touched by the rhythm of a good song. To the extent that it is common knowledge amongst my friends and acquaintances that after a long days work, they will inevitably have to bear with my off key singing! That is that way I relieve my stress and push myself to go on and on. I would choose singing any day over winning freebies and free coupons on the internet like comet discount codes!

My love for dancing cannot be repressed nor hidden from anyone. Unfortunately, my spouse has two left feet so is very conscious while dancing. There go my chances of dancing till the wee hours of the night! Of course, there is no stopping me and I will find someway to do what I love. I joined a burlesque dance class! It has been one of the best things that I could have done for myself. The purpose is definitely to keep fit and maintain the nimbleness of my feet but the amount of fun all of us have together in the class is incomparable. One of the highlights of my week is my dance class because I get to learn dance steps which I would never have tried on my own and it boosts my confidence to the next level.

I can see the envy in people’s eyes when I tell them I am learning burlesque dance and having such a rollicking time doing so. It is something which a lot of people want to do but for some reason do not do. Either they find that they are too old to learn, what will their family say, or just cannot make the time to do something which they would otherwise love to do. Whatever it may be, my life is rocking and rolling!
